Blog on the Tyne
The first unsuspecting viral star of 2016 was crowned this week… but surely nobody was expecting it to be a North East puddle.
At its peak, more than 20,000 across the globe people watched on streaming app Periscope as Geordie pedestrians tried – and sometimes failed – to safely negotiate a large puddle that had formed on a busy road into the city. Now, whilst many will use this opportunity as an excuse to eulogise about how this is going to be THE year for the so far non-potential-filling app, it is those who filmed it that have piqued our interest at TRA HQ.
A Newcastle-based marketing agency named Drummond were behind the stream in more ways than one, as their office overlooked the mini-lake and workers had spent much of that day looking out of the window to catch a glimpse of the latest craze of puddle hopping. Finding themselves gripped by the splish-splashing action, they decided to live stream it so the rest of the world’s office workers could join in the fun.
I am sure I speak for many when I say this is the first I had heard of the now world famous agency and this should be a wake up call to many. Showing personality on Twitter is something that agencies shouldn’t be afraid of doing but many often are – especially within our own B2B sector. This shouldn’t be a forced show of just how ‘mad wicked cool’ your office is, but if there is something that the whole agency is enjoying – why not share it with others? Most may ignore it but as Drummond has proven, having a laugh can help you make a big splash.
