Why Bother With Work Experience?

With employers increasingly looking for employees with more than just outstanding qualifications, being able to mention relevant work experience on your CV can be incredibly beneficial. I’ve been doing a paid internship here at The Right Agency since last September. Here’s what I’ve learned so far…

Practise, practise, practise.
Press releases, feature-copy, persuasive writing – they’re all different, so it’s important to practise your craft as much as possible. Similarly, reading the media you’re targeting as often as possible will help you learn what works and what doesn’t.

The importance of good relationships.
Forming and maintaining good relationships with clients and journalists is vital. Remember everyone’s names and get used to rejection BUT don’t take it personally. Lots of contacts will be genuinely busy so be prepared to hear “no thanks” and “can you just email it to me?” pretty regularly! But keep making those calls if you’ve got a story you know is newsworthy.

Knowing your clients.
In order to write a press release or participate in a brainstorm about a company you’d never previously heard of, you’ll need to research them thoroughly first. Find out if the company has an interesting story to tell. Be inquisitive!

Making the most of your colleagues.
Don’t be afraid to ask daft questions. They know that you’re not a PR veteran yet so you can ask questions as they arise and get immediate answers. They’ll give you direct guidelines about what’s needed, and identify and correct mistakes before it’s too late.

The Office is based in reality.
Not everyone likes Morrissey. Not everyone likes their coffee the same. It’s important to know what makes your colleagues happy – and how to exploit it!

As the PR industry is ever changing, it’s important for employers to offer people new routes into it in order to avoid their companies becoming homogenised. PR revolves around personality and personal touches and the more varied and diverse the workforce, the better. So email any local PR specialists, sell yourself, be prepared to work hard (and potentially unpaid) and get that experience under your belt!
